I’ve been wanting to see a proper adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series for years! I thought we were actually going to get it when Ron Howard was attached to direct, but then the studio got cold feet with his ambitious plans, and we ended up with the 2017 film starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey.
I admit, I enjoyed that film for what it was, but it could have and should have been so much better! After the movie was released, Amazon was producing a series adaptation of the story, but then that series fell through and they decided not to move forward with it.
Well, there’s a filmmaker out there who would love the opportunity to take a crack at it next. That filmmaker is Mike Flanagan, the director behind Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House, and Gerald’s Game. This guy has been pumping out one solid film and TV project after another, and I think he has what it takes to give fans the Dark Tower adaptation that we’ve all been wanting to see.
During a recent interview with SYFY Wire, Flanagan said:
“The Dark Tower is forever going to be the story I wish I could tell. That would be the Holy Grail. I mean, talk about an adaptation challenge. So many very talented people have poured so much time and heart and soul and blood, sweat, and tears trying to crack that.”
Whoever is currently in control of the rights of The Dark Tower, I hope they will see this and jump at the opportunity to get Flanagan on board to make this happen!
