In The Heights and Vida star Melissa Barrera has joined the cast of Scream 5, and she will be playing a key role in the story. We have no idea what that role will be, but we’ll eventually find out!
Barrera will join the previously cast Courteney Cox, who will be reprising her role in the franchise as Gale Weathers, and David Arquette, who is coming back as Dewey Riley. Neve Campbell, who portrayed Sidney Prescott in the franchise is still in talks to join, and everyone involved hopes that she comes back.
Scream 5 is coming from Ready or Not filmmakers Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. They are directing the film from a script written by James Vanderbilt (Murder Mystery, Zodiac, The Amazing Spider-Man) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not).
As far as story details go, all we know right now is that “it will follow a woman returning to her home town to try to find out who has been committing a series of vicious crimes.”
Franchise writer and producer Kevin Williamson seems excited about the next Scream film and made the following statement regarding the next movie, saying:
“I’m excited to reteam with David and work with Jamie, Guy and Radio Silence on the next Scream. Their take on the movie is both original, inventive and honors Wes’ legacy in a wonderful way. Ready or Not was my favorite horror film of last year and I can’t wait to see what their amazing talents bring to the Scream universe. I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”
I’ve enjoyed all of the films made in this franchise, so I’m hoping that this fifth one delivers something cool and special.
