Yeon Sang-ho, the director of the Korean zombie thriller Train of Busan and its follow-up film Peninsula, is developing another sequel and that sequel will be an animated film!
The first film, Train of Busan, was a great movie! I haven’t seen the sequel yet, which was recently released, but those who have seen it seem to love it! Before these two films were made, Sang-ho made an animated prequel titled Seoul Station, which told the story of how the zombie plague that devastates South Korea began.
Sang-ho was actually working in animation before he jumped in to make these live-action movies, and for the next one, he’s decided to go back to his roots, and he’s already working on it. In a recent interview with Polygon, the filmmaker revealed that the movie will be a prequel to Peninsula:
“A prequel to Peninsula: we are currently in talks about making a cartoon about the relationship between Unit 631 and Min-jung. I am hopeful that the story can be further expanded upon through the less inhibited cartoon medium.”
I love the fact that the universe is going to continue to be expended in animated form. In this case, it will dive into the stories of the character Min-jung, the mother of two young girls who rescue Jung-seok.
When talking about coming up with his concept for Peninsula, the filmmaker said:
“I wanted to make a post-apocalyptic movie with a devastated Korea. I also imagined a story of a young child driving a dump truck in the ruined Korea.”
When discussing the story for Peninsula he said:
“The story is about how one is able to find hope in a peninsula that has become isolated and full of despair. The main character, Jung-seok, escaped from the peninsula once before and then lived in a world without hope, so he returns to the peninsula again. I made the movie with the intent to show that Jung-seok was not trying to escape from a geopolitical world, but from a community that was full of selfishness.”
I’m looking forward to watching the sequel, and now I can look forward to the new animated prequel being developed. For those of you who haven’t seen the original animated movie, Seoul Station, you can check it out below.
