Yesterday, a couple of new photos from The Suicide Squad dropped for the fans to enjoy showing off several of the crazy characters that will fill the story. As you know, this movie is going to be filled with a lot of characters and you’d think that DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. might have some rules on which characters can be killed off and which characters can’t. Well, it turns out that none of the characters were protected by the studio. Gunn was given the freedom to do whatever he wanted with these characters!
Gunn recently took some fan questions on Twitter, and in response to a post suggesting some of the characters, including Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, had “franchise armor”, the filmmaker denied that, explaining:
“No character was protected by DC. They gave me carte blanche to do what I wanted. That was one of the things we agreed to before I came to work for them. I wasn’t looking for shock value but I wanted the audience to know anything could happen.”
Gunn went on to use Yondu as an example of a main character he has killed off in the past, and explains that when it’s a meaningful part of the story, a character that is killed off will stay dead:
“I get sometimes you can bring back characters in a cool way. But usually, if a character dies, & it’s a meaningful part of the story, the character should stay dead. So unless it’s a flashback, Yondu will stay dead, as far as I’m concerned. Otherwise, it ruins his sacrifice.”
So, that being said, in The Suicide Squad anything is possible! Anything can happen! It’ll be interesting to see what Suicide Squad characters end up being killed off in the story.
The cast of the film includes Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Steve Agee as King Shark, and Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, Michael Rooker as Savant, Nathan Fillion is T.D.K., Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Steve Agee is King Shark, John Cena is Peacemaker, Joaquín Cosío is Mayor General Mateo Suarez, Jennifer Holland is Emilia Harcourt, Storm Reid is Bloodsport’s daughter, Tyla, Sean Gunn as Weasle, Flula Borg as Javelin, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, and Mayling Ng as Mongal. Taika Waititi will also be in the film.
The Suicide Squad is currently set to hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
