We’ve got some new details to share with you for The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special thanks to Entertainment Weekly. The new holiday special is coming to Disney+ and it reunites LEGO versions of Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewie, Rose, and the droids for a joyous feast on Life Day, which is the holiday first introduced in the classic 1978 special.

The animated Holiday Special follows the events in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and follows Rey as she leaves her friends to prepare for Life Day “as she sets off on a new adventure with BB-8 to gain a deeper knowledge of the Force. At a mysterious Jedi Temple, she is hurled into a cross-timeline adventure through beloved moments in Star Wars cinematic history, coming into contact with Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Yoda, Obi-Wan and other iconic heroes and villains from all nine Skywalker saga films. But will she make it back in time for the Life Day feast and learn the true meaning of holiday spirit?”

The creators behind the new Holiday Special wanted to have some crazy fun with it and include things that we might not have ever seen before by creating a cross-timeline adventure that will include characters meeting other characters that would have normally not been possible. Executive producer James Waugh says:

“The Holiday Special has something you will never see in Star Wars otherwise which is all the characters from across all timelines crashing together. Normally story groups are so concerned about maintaining this amazing galaxy so that it feels cohesive, it was liberating to do this in a way that’s charming and fun.”

As you see in the new image above, one of the things the story will include is Rey fighting Darth Vader! Waugh goes on to talk about the inspiration behind the character combos that we’ll see, saying they were partly inspired by the project’s producers watching how kids played with Star Wars Lego toys:

“We started realizing that the way they play with them isn’t with canonical separation, it’s not, ‘Let’s put all the classic trilogy sets here, the prequel sets here, new sequel sets here.’ My son literally just dumps his bucket out. We realized that was a play pattern that could actually inform the fun of this show.”

It’s also said that the series will include three different Obi-Wan Kenobis, young and old versions of Han Solo, as well as Rey also meeting a young Luke Skywalker and a young Kylo Ren.

When talking about what the ultimate goal for The LEGO Star Wars Special is, Waugh said:

“We really wanted to do was create a piece of entertainment that could be watched every year. In this age of nonstop new content, something that you can actually just go back to over and over every year is rare. What excites me is that I think we achieved that and the story has heart to it.”

The cast for the special includes Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), as well as Star Wars: The Clone Wars vets Matt Lanter (Anakin Skywalker), Tom Kane (Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn), James Arnold Taylor (Obi-Wan Kenobi), and Dee Bradley Baker (clone troopers).

LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special was directed by Ken Cunningham and written by David Shayne, who is also co-executive producer. Josh Rimes, Jason Cosler, Jacqui Lopez, Jill Wilfert, and Keith Malone are executive producers.

The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special streams November 17th on Disney+.
